Supporting the mental health of tradies with thoughtful AI
In collaboration with the Movember Foundation and IPC Health, No Moss created a mobile app that uses AI to provide young male tradies with education and support for mental health conversations.
The Chop Out Convos app helps young male tradies to build their confidence in order to support their workmates through checking in on mental health. The app, co-designed with tradies, for tradies, allows users to practice tough conversations in a safe and intuitive AI-supported environment.
Challenge
Young Australian male tradies are at a disproportionately higher risk of suffering from mental health related issues and suicide compared to the rest of the Australian population. In research conducted by No Moss and IPC Health, 80% of tradies surveyed reported "there are things about tradie culture that make it challenging to talk about mental health”, with 96% admitting they wanted to be able to talk to their mates about mental health and support them, but they "would be unsure what to say” and were "worried to say the wrong thing”.
Outcome
This app was the product of best practice co-design—incorporating user research, design sprints and dual-track development. It integrated an imaginative and innovative use of ChatGPT, with a strong emphasis on implementing safe ethical boundaries for AI in within a mental health app.
Results
Eighty-one percent of tradies who used Chop Out Convos said they would “openly recommend Chop Out Convos to colleague and friend networks” or “very likely recommend to tradies I work with”. One hundred percent of users who completed a practice conversation indicated their confidence to reach out to a workmate in real life.
“Chop Out Convos is a simple, clean, and intuitive app that directly addresses a gap in mental health support. Congratulations on a brilliant use of co-design and AI integration. The Jury commends the design team for this outstanding project and for setting the bar for good design in this category. Seriously well done on this project that will no doubt make a positive impact on people's lives.”
